The Jazzman's Cafe line of proprietary coffee offerings include products that are certified with the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal of approval, products that are certified as Fair Trade by TransFair USA and products that are certified as Organic by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
USDA Organic By law, organic coffee is produced only by farms that have not used synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances for at least three years. Jazzman’s organic coffees are grown using sustainable methods that have a low impact on the environment such as crop rotation to control pests and prevent erosion and the depletion of soil nutrients.
Fair Trade Certified Fair Trade certification provides small-farmer co-operatives a guaranteed price premium for their coffee. Fair Trade Certified™ requires strict environmental stewardship such as prohibiting the use of genetically modified organisms and hazardous pesticides. Workers have the right to join unions and bargain collectively, and benefit from health and safety standards. Most, but not all Fair Trade coffee is certified organic.
Rain Forest Alliance Jazzman’s coffees displaying the Rainforest Alliance Certified eco-label have been grown exclusively on farms that meet Rainforest Alliance’s guidelines for sustainability. Rainforest Alliance works with farmers to protect wildlife, wild lands, workers’ rights and local communities.
UTZ Certified Jazzman’s UTZ CERTIFIED coffee producers comply with the UTZ CERTIFIED Code of Conduct: an internationally recognized set of criteria for socially and environmentally responsible coffee growing practices. Elements include the responsible use of agricultural chemicals, protection of natural flora and fauna, protection of labor rights, and access to health care and education for workers’ families.
Bird Friendly / Shade Grown Many coffees are produced on full-sun plantations, some of which are on deforested land. Shade grown coffee is farmed on plantations covered by a canopy of diverse tree species which provide protection and rich mulch for the coffee plants. (Not to mention a lush habitat for migratory birds!) Many coffee aficionados believe that the smaller berries produced by shade grown plants make for exceptionally rich, fine quality beans. Bird Friendly coffee is certified by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center.
