Cynthia Cooper - Hall of Fame
Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, Prairie View A&M University head women’s basketball coach, was recently name as an inductee to the Naismith Hall of Fame.
Cooper is arguably the greatest women’ basketball player of all time having won championships in college, the Olympics and the WNBA.
Fort Lewis College - Improve the Quality of Life
A Fort Lewis College Sociology student with extensive experience traveling in the mountains of North America, Europe and Asia created Skid4Kashmir, an international nonprofit organization that provides ski equipment, clothing and training for children in Kashmir.
It is hoped that through their shared experienced in the program, the children will find that they have more in common with one another than their social and economic backgrounds might otherwise suggest.
James Hilaire - Persevere and Share Strength
James Hilaire wasn’t sure if he would ever walk again, let alone complete his degree after sustaining life-threatening injuries during a collegiate soccer game. Now that he has graduated from University of New Haven, Hilaire is developing a non-profit organization that will be called “Big Time Recovery”.
The goal of the organization will be to provide emotional support for injured high school and college athletes, as well as and financial assistance to pay for books and other school expenses. Hilaire, a Haitian native, also plans to send his rehabilitation equipment to the quake-ravaged nation.
St. John's Hospital - Promote Wear pink
St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois partnered with the American Cancer Society and cancer survivors Guerry Suggs and Richard Battles in an effort to wear pink and increase awareness about breast cancer and the importance of screening.
Funds raised through “Real Mean Wear Pink” will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Patient Resource Center, located at St. John’s Pavilion.
Shawnee State - Build Homes for others
Sixteen students at Shawnee State University and two AmeriCorps/Vista leaders, Kelly Hatas and Sarah Lowe, helped build a house in Beaumont, Texas, near the Louisiana border to participate in the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge.
When they arrived, the group faced concrete slab and a pile of lumber, by the end of the week, the students had raised nearly all of the interior and exterior walls. The SSU students donated $2,250 to Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson County and put in 540 Volunteer hours.
Shawnee State - Help Figth Hunger & Homelessness
For the last six years Shawnee State University takes part in their annual “Shantytown” event to support Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Volunteers of Shantytown live in their own cardboard makeshift houses outside of class sessions and overnight to help raise money for the Scioto County Homeless Shelter. Volunteers use their talents, for example, playing an instrument, to ask passersby for donations
Chelsea Back - Run for Ohio Senate
Like any college student, Chelsea Back will spend the next two months juggling homework and activities while preparing for finals. But unlike most of her classmates, the Dension University freshmen also will be running for office.
Back, 19, is a candidate for senator in Ohio’s 31st District! Back is studying political science and religion at Denison. “I’ve always wanted to work with people, and i don’t think there is anything better than trying to make their lives better, ” she said.
Dr. Pamela Gaber - Unearth Old World relics
Dr. Pamela Gaber, Professor of Archaeology and Religion at Lycoming College, is a world-renowned expert in the sculpture typology and pottery chronology (the tracking of the development of pottery types(, She trained in Israel in the 1960’s and has been working in the field archaeology ever since. She has been running her own excavation in Cyprus since 1987. Dr. Gaber continued her emphasis on training students in excavation techniques, recording , and interpretation. by the end of each season field school students each ruin a trench for 3 days that includes recording, tagging, measuring, drawing and consulting on tactical decisions.
Michael Belay - Change the World
By day, Michael Belay is a Public Safety Officer on campus at Chapman University. But Michael is also the founder and CEO of Hands Across the Planet to Poor Youth, Inc. (H.A.P.P.Y.), an organization dedicated to ensuring a better quality of life for all disadvantaged children by providing them with a chance of healthcare, higher education, and purified drinking water.
Michael is so dedicated, he even sold his own home to ensure his Ethiopian school was furnished, maintained, and safe!
Westminster College
Westminster College's Titan Radio --WWNW-- has been ranked by Pinceton Review as one of the "Best College Radio Stations" in the country for the second year in a row.
Communication Studies, Theater and Art Chairman David Barner adds "This is incredible news for our students, staff and faculty to be named as one of the top 20 college radio stations for another year!"
Cabrini College - Holly Prendergast
Cabrini students have been active supporters of Sodexo's efforts to increase Fair Trade products on campus. Sophomore Holly Prendergast said, "Fair Trade not only supplies great tasting foods, but it also gives those farmers in developing nations a fair chance at life."
Cabrini students have even visited Fair Trade coffee growers in Guatemala as a result of interest sparked by Sodexo's efforts.
